Chapter 7
âWow!â
Sadie couldnât think of anything else to say as the limo slowed down to a crawl on the gravel drive in front of the grandest house she had ever seen. Ok, maybe not the grandest sheâd seen but certainly the most impressive she had ever been in or probably would be again.
The Mayorâs residence was owned by the town and on the National Register of Historic Places. The Victorian mansion, built at the turn of the century, had just under 30 rooms spread over its 3 floors. To Sadieâs eyes it looked like a miniature version of The White House, adorned as it was with balconies, balustrades and columns.
âYou can say that again,â Kyle said as the three of them got out of the car.
âYou didnât tell me the place looked like this,â she admonished Gabe, looking down at her simple blue cocktail dress in despair. âI knew I should have gone out and bought something new.â
Both men stopped their progress up towards an open front door with noise and light spilling out of it. âYouâre kidding, right?â Gabe seemed surprised by her words.
âSadie, you are gonna be the best looking woman there,â Kyle added, running down the few steps separating them and grabbing her hand to pull her forwards. âYou couldnât have picked anything better.â
âHeâs right,â Gabe whispered as they approached the door. âThat dress is hot. You look amazing and since I saw you in it, my mind hasnât stopped working on ways to get you out of it.â
âAmen to that,â Kyle said, running the most casual of caresses across the small of her naked back, sending shivers down her spine. Sadie basked in their approval and the knowledge of how hot they seemed to be for her even as she suspected that they were just being kind.
The dress was a backless halter style with a V neck that sheâd complemented with a silver choker. The full skirt ended just below the knee and had been cut on the bias, making the fabric swish around her legs as she moved. The satin dress, the color of bright sapphires, turned her eyes a deeper shade of blue, which was the reason sheâd bought it a few years back. Tonight was its debut and she felt thrilled by the reaction sheâd gotten so far. Despite her nervousness, she realized she didnât really care what anybody else thought. When sheâd chosen to leave her hair loose around her shoulders save for diamante comb holding it back over one ear, sheâd been dressing to please them.
Regardless of whom it was sheâd made the effort for, many of the men in the room stopped talking to stare at her boldly as she entered. Kyle seemed to find the whole thing very amusing, but Gabe wasnât impressed. She felt a possessive hand at her back as he forced them in turn to look away with a dead-eyed stare.
Thankfully for all involved, the Mayor seemed to be a friendly, old man with nothing but kindness in his gaze and a laugh in his voice.
